A little sky knowledge
The northern lights
in Tromsø.
Tromsø’s northern position makes it a well-known starting point for aurora watching. Activity can be overhead or elsewhere along the oval. Pan beyond the city to understand the wider pattern rather than relying on a single global index.
Visit Tromsø describes the usual viewing season as late August to early April. This seasonal window is about having dark enough skies; it is not a prediction that any particular night will bring a display.

Model and forecast explanation: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.
Do I need a large geomagnetic storm to see aurora in Tromsø?
Not necessarily. Tromsø is already within the auroral zone. Modest global activity can still be relevant here, but no activity level alone guarantees a visible display.
When is the northern lights season in Tromsø?
Late August to early April. This is a guide to the darker part of the year, not a prediction for a particular night. Aurora activity changes throughout the year.
How far ahead does the map forecast?
NOAA’s OVATION product provides a short-term outlook, typically around 30–90 minutes depending on solar wind conditions. It is not a forecast for the whole night. Check the forecast timestamp and return for a fresh reading.
