A little sky knowledge

The northern lights
in Reykjavík.

Reykjavík sits in the southwest, away from the geographic center of Iceland. A dedicated map center is useful when the activity pattern differs between the capital region and the north of the country.

A city marker is only a reference point. The model describes aurora above a broad area and cannot confirm a sighting from a hotel window or a particular stretch of coastline.

Model and forecast explanation: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

Can you see northern lights from Reykjavík itself?

Yes, sightings are possible from the city when conditions allow. This map only describes aurora activity. Use it as a starting point, then check the actual sky before deciding whether a display is visible.

When is the northern lights season in Reykjavík?

Late August to late April. This is a guide to the darker part of the year, not a prediction for a particular night. Aurora activity changes throughout the year.

How far ahead does the map forecast?

NOAA’s OVATION product provides a short-term outlook, typically around 30–90 minutes depending on solar wind conditions. It is not a forecast for the whole night. Check the forecast timestamp and return for a fresh reading.
