A little sky knowledge
The northern lights
in Kiruna.
Kiruna provides a different map center from Abisko, to its northwest. Both are northern destinations, but an auroral band can vary across the region. The map lets you inspect that pattern without assuming one global activity number describes every place equally.
Use the location marker for orientation. It marks the city center, not a recommended viewing spot or an instrument measuring aurora directly above the city.

Model and forecast explanation: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.
Should I compare Kiruna and Abisko on separate nights?
For current activity, compare them at the same observation time. The oval changes, so a difference between readings taken hours apart can reflect timing rather than a consistent difference between the destinations.
When is the northern lights season in Kiruna?
Autumn to early spring. This is a guide to the darker part of the year, not a prediction for a particular night. Aurora activity changes throughout the year.
How far ahead does the map forecast?
NOAA’s OVATION product provides a short-term outlook, typically around 30–90 minutes depending on solar wind conditions. It is not a forecast for the whole night. Check the forecast timestamp and return for a fresh reading.
