A little sky knowledge

The northern lights
in Lapland.

Here, “Lapland” refers to Finnish Lapland. The wider northern region also reaches into neighboring countries, so the map remains open for exploring Sweden and Norway. The colored band moves with geomagnetic activity; administrative borders have no effect on it.

Rovaniemi sits near the southern edge of this region. A reading around the northern fells can differ from one at the Arctic Circle, which is why a regional map is useful before opening a city view.

Model and forecast explanation: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

Does the Lapland forecast also cover Rovaniemi?

Yes. Rovaniemi is in Finnish Lapland, but the region is much larger than the city. Open the Rovaniemi page to center the map there and compare its position with the active oval.

When is the northern lights season in Lapland?

Autumn to early spring. This is a guide to the darker part of the year, not a prediction for a particular night. Aurora activity changes throughout the year.

How far ahead does the map forecast?

NOAA’s OVATION product provides a short-term outlook, typically around 30–90 minutes depending on solar wind conditions. It is not a forecast for the whole night. Check the forecast timestamp and return for a fresh reading.
